Contemporary

Contemporary dance aims to unite the mind and body of the dancer, integrating narrative and stimuli to generate ideas and movement. This style allows for individual self-expression and personalized artistic choices. It incorporates the precise legwork of ballet, the upper body technique, and floorwork of modern dance, while also embracing spontaneous changes in rhythm, speed, and direction. At TJS, contemporary dance classes help students cultivate their unique movement style based on their strengths and abilities, while also pushing beyond their limits. In addition, students will have the opportunity to further their contemporary dance expertise by forming a troupe and participating in competitive dance, guided by experienced, professional staff.

BALLET

TJS Dance Academy offers a wide range of classical ballet classes suitable for every student under the umbrella of The Royal Academy of Dance. Students are required to enhance their dance technique through the classical ballet classes offered. While not mandatory, we strongly encourage all students to participate as it serves to motivate and reward students of all ages and abilities. This provides a structured and progressive approach to learning and accomplishment (RAD, 2020).

Students taking this examination must attend two compulsory graded ballet classes and one-hour pointe class (Intermediate Foundation-Advanced 2) to learn the required syllabus.

HIP-HOP

Unleash your passion for hip-hop with our dynamic dance classes! Hip hop dance originated from street dance and is often performed to hip-hop music. The styles have evolved over time and range from modern to commercial, providing a diverse set of movements and dynamics for students to master. In addition to being entertaining, hip-hop is a fantastic way to build confidence and learn to perform in front of an audience and peers. At TJS, our hip-hop classes cater to students of all levels, offering the opportunity to develop skills influenced by different hip-hop styles. Students can look forward to learning choreography for troupe performances and solo routines, immersing themselves in the exciting world of hip-hop dance.

JAZZ

Jazz dance is a combination of a variety of styles including ballet, modern dance, social and street dance, folk dance, and acrobatics and uses dance forms of different nations, most influentially, Africa. This fusion is limitless to the creativity of the choreographer, although having two essential characteristics polycentricism (isolation of the body, creating several centres of movement) and polyrhythm (moving simultaneously to many different rhythms). Most common in dance today, and taught at TJS, is commercial jazz (a contemporary fusion of street jazz and commercial hip hop), providing students the opportunity to increase their fitness levels, and dance technique. Open to all ages and abilities, our jazz classes give students insight into what is expected in the commercial dance industry, while giving them the chance to perform in solos, troupes and competition groups.

ELITE TECHNIQUE

As dancers, it is important to acquire good muscular strength to create more speed and force to your movements, muscular endurance to have the ability to maintain and complete classes and performances safely, and flexibility in order to accomplish a larger range of motion, improving the aesthetic of many skills and shapes. TJS offers a technique class where we focus on strength, stretch, conditioning, working to improve these elements vital to being a dancer. This class will utilise the increased ability of the students to develop a range of skills to incorporate into troupes and solos, or to implement into class work. This class will not only improve the overall strength of the dancer, but assist in improving our students’ confidence and consistency in performing different skills in class or on stage, helping them become the most employable, intelligent and skilful dancers they have the potential to be.

LYRICAL

Modern dance is often considered to have emerged as a rejection of, or rebellion against classical ballet. It focuses on the training of the back and chest to curve, bend, twist and contract. Lyrical dance is a dance style that combines elements of ballet, jazz, acrobatics and modern dance, and focuses on the expression of different moods in relation to music and different song lyrics. TJS offers classes in lyrical dance where students make use of their ballet and jazz technique, while learning to utilise their bodies to convey emotions and relay a story.

TAP

TJS Dance Academy prides itself on its versatility through providing a wide range of styles to all of our students. Students are encouraged to take part in our Tap classes taught by our incredibly talented, and experienced staff. Tap dance teaches students how to find rhythm, syncopation and beats in music, while learning how to isolate their body and move their legs and feet fast and intricately. Tap is focused on making rhythmic, audible sounds from striking the ground that complements a piece of music and movement of the upper body. Having knowledge in tap dance is very desired in musical theatre, and sets students up to be employable in their future endeavours in the performing arts.
